the Dirt road farm Fold & Beef
|
Scottish Highlanders are the oldest registered breed of cattle on record. Their herd book dates back to 1884! And they fit our farm's needs perfectly!
We strive to keep things simple. Being a small, family run operation, we require a fairly stress free, even tempered breed. Highlanders are naturally disease resistant, low maintenance, and honestly thrive in our tough Wisconsin weather! Their double coat makes them well suited for harsh weather. Plus, who wouldn’t fall in love with their wild hair?! |
NOUN
folds (plural noun) · the fold (noun) 1. an enclosure in a field where livestock can be kept. In Scottland, they were made of stone. 2. a herd of Highland cattle |
After a few years of purebred highlander calves, we decided to make a few changes within the herd to improve our carcass quality and structure. Our original line of highlanders was bred to be super hardy and thrifty - but their meat quality wasn't what we were looking for, so changes were to be made.
So, in early 2020, we decided to add a new herd bull. After some research, we went with a mini Hereford bull! Sherman is the BEST bull we could have hoped for! He is calm, well-mannered, respectful, and throws the most beautiful baldfaced calves imaginable. |
